I think social media has utterly removed political control from the corporate mainstream media and placed it back into the hands of the people. This latest election cycle is proof of that. The liberal mainstream media lied, misconstrued, or misled about polling and most everything else with regard to the campaigns and the candidates. The media, and by extension our government, has lost control of the narrative. Social media has done that. Thoughts and ideas, for the most part, are now exchanged instantly without any filters or censorship. The corporations don't like that. They want to be able to control the narrative and that's why we see people being censored in a big way on sites like Twitter and Facebook.
Platforms like Gab, Twitter, Facebook and Instagram have empowered the once silent majority. I think the silent majority was only silent because they did not have an effective platform. Most well-adjusted adults in the US are not going to take time away from work or family to go out into the streets and chant or spit on police to make their point. Social media platforms have given people, like you and I, a platform to express and support their political beliefs. We can be patriots and express ideas like freedom and liberty there, where the corporate controlled media never allows it. Fox news may be the only corporate controlled media where a patriotic view won't be ridiculed and diminished, but even there you have a 50/50 chance that they will demonize you, depending on your message. And that's if you can even get on.
Social media empowers people but most of the large sites like Twitter and Facebook are corporate controlled and as liberal as they come. Both of those sites constantly scramble to diminish anything but liberal/socialist/communist views. New platforms like Gab are not corporate controlled and promise to be free and uncensored for all. That is huge and very empowering to ordinary people. It remains to be seen if they will keep their promises. I hope so.
